Unlocking Music, One Instrument at a Time
Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
What is the Katie Sullivan Instrument Library?
The Katie Sullivan Instrument Library is a charitable organization that provides free musical instruments to students in Newfoundland and Labrador schools. Our mission is to break down financial barriers so all students can participate fully in school music programs.
Who can benefit from the Instrument Library?
Any student in Newfoundland and Labrador identified by their school’s music or band teacher as in need of an instrument can benefit from the library. We collaborate with teachers to ensure instruments reach students who need them most.
Why was the Instrument Library created?
The library was inspired by Katie Sullivan, a dedicated music teacher who has spent her career ensuring all students in her schools have access to music education, regardless of financial circumstances. The library continues her legacy by providing instruments to students who otherwise might not be able to participate in music programs.
Borrowing an Instrument
How can a student borrow an instrument?
Music teachers or school representatives apply to the library on behalf of their students. Once they create an account with us, teachers collect the instruments from the library and distribute them to the students.
Is there a cost to borrow an instrument?
No, the library provides instruments free of charge for the duration of the school year or as long as the student is enrolled in their school’s music program.
What types of instruments are available?
We maintain a collection of quality instruments suitable for school music and band programs, including brass, woodwind, percussion, and string instruments. Instruments are either purchased new or donated in gently used condition.
How are instruments maintained?
All instruments are inspected, repaired if necessary, and maintained regularly by trained volunteers and staff. This ensures that they are in excellent condition for students.

Can I donate my old musical instrument?

Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes, as a registered charitable organization, we issue tax receipts for all monetary donations of $100 or more. Unfortunately, we are unable to issue tax receipts for donations of instruments.
