Honouring John Hutton’s Legacy

With a career spanning more than 57 years, John Hutton was a force in Newfoundland and Labrador’s music, entertainment, and business communities.

A true Newfoundland and Labrador rock icon, John was best known as lead guitarist and singer with the legendary band Billy and the Bruisers, a group that remained active for more than 36 years. Throughout his life, he was also a passionate advocate, mentor, entrepreneur, promoter, and community builder whose influence reached generations of musicians and artists.

John began his musical journey at the historic Charles Hutton & Son music store on Water Street in St. John’s, eventually taking ownership of the family business and continuing its legacy. Over the years, he performed with numerous bands and musical projects, worked in artist management and event promotion, helped shape Newfoundland and Labrador’s music industry through MusicNL and the East Coast Music Association, and mentored countless people across music, entertainment, and business.

A Dedicated Collection Within The Katie Sullivan Instrument Library

Developed in partnership with John’s wife, Caron Hawco, this special collection honours John’s extraordinary legacy and lifelong commitment to music, mentorship, community, and helping others succeed.

John was known not only for his talent and accomplishments, but also for his humour, generosity, encouragement, and ability to bring people together. He believed deeply in music, community, and creating opportunities for others.

Through this dedicated collection within The Katie Sullivan Instrument Library, John’s legacy will continue by helping young people across Newfoundland and Labrador access the instruments they need to participate fully in school music programs.

Instruments purchased through this fund will become part of the Library’s inventory and will be loaned, free of charge, to students who may otherwise be unable to participate in music education because of financial barriers.

Instruments that are part of The John Hutton Instrument Collection for Young Musicians will be specially identified within the Library through dedicated labels placed on instrument cases, ensuring that John’s name and legacy remain connected to each instrument as it reaches young musicians throughout the province.

Every instrument supported through this collection will help a young musician learn, play, grow, and experience the joy of making music.
